Where does our money come from?

The National Lottery raises money for a range of good causes that benefit communities across the United Kingdom.

From every pound spent on lottery tickets, 28p goes directly to good causes split between the following categories:

  • Arts
  • Charities
  • Health, education and the environment
  • Heritage
  • Sports

The National Lottery is currently operated by The Camelot Group under a seven year licence which commenced in January 2002.

Different organisations are responsible for making National Lottery grants to projects in each of the six categories. These organisations are known as ‘distributors’. The Heritage Lottery Fund makes grants for projects concerning heritage anywhere in the UK.

  • 4.66 pence from every pound goes to heritage projects
